Company Background
Janice Bryant Howroyd founded ACT•1 Personnel in 1978 with a small $1,500 loan and a strong vision to capitalize on her ability for matching people with jobs. To better provide the most qualified employees and to protect her growing entertainment-industry client base from bad hires, ACT•1 staff checked references, education and criminal records. The seed for what would later become A-Check America began as a value-added function in ACT•1 Personnel Services.
As technological advances made information more readily available and screening expanded to include additional services like drug testing, the ACT•1 Employment Screening Division reached a crossroads. In 1998, Ms. Howroyd decided demand for the division's services warranted establishing a separate company focused on the opportunities posed by an electronic, information-age based employment screening industry and the developing needs of hiring professionals.
She gathered a seasoned team of investigative, employment screening and process management experts and A-Check America was born. The privately-held company began operations out of a small rented office space in Montclair, CA with just a handful of employees.
A-Check's vision to provide the best customer service experience, to develop the most advanced, user-friendly, web-based user-interface technology and to deploy high quality information products has produced a financially stable, double-digit annual growth company with more than 3,000 employer clients.
Currently, the A-Check processing center operates from a new, modern 30,000 sq. ft. facility in Riverside, CA with a 165 employee-strong workforce. The company has three other locations in California: Our Corporate Headquarters is in Torrance, the SAS 70 Certified Data Center is in Burbank and our Finance and Satellite Corporate Office is in Glendale.
A-Check serves employers of all sizes belonging to a wide range of industries, including Telecommunications, Healthcare, Financial, Government, Retail, Aviation, Trucking, Education, Energy, Engineering, Procurement and Construction, Staffing, Hospitality, Entertainment, Manufacturing, Food Service, Professional Services, Real Estate, Distribution and more.
A-Check America is a founding member of NAPBS (National Association of Professional Background Screeners), and holds active memberships in a variety of HR and Security industry organizations including SHRM and ASIS.
