CRIMINAL & PUBLIC RECORDS SEARCHES

Statewide Criminal Search

Available for five, seven and ten year searches, the Statewide Criminal Search accesses individual states and the District of Columbia's' Department of Justice criminal repository information.

The availability, quality, cost and turnaround time of data varies dramatically between states. A-Check America focuses on utilizing a limited number of statewide repositories, which provide the proper balance of the following four characteristics:

Turnaround time - Many states have turnaround times that exceed 3 business days. A-Check America only recommends those states with an average turnaround time of 3 business days or less.

Limited barriers to access - Some states require notarized authorizations, fingerprints, or have other equally restrictive policies. A-Check America uses those statewide repositories, which do not require unreasonable or unobtainable information.

Reasonable out of pocket expenses - Statewide repository out of pocket expenses can exceed $50. A-Check America focuses its use to those states with more reasonable fees, which average approximately $10-15.

Data Integrity- A-Check America accesses the statewide repository in those states where counties are consistent with the timeliness of uploading and updating criminal record data.

While the processing of a Statewide search (versus a County Courthouse search) offers greater geographic coverage area, it must be recognized that State Central Repositories receive their criminal record information and updates from local law enforcement agencies, and the courts within the state.

The integrity and/or completeness of their data may be compromised because the procedures by which records are supposed to be forwarded to the state central repositories could be subject to manpower shortages, lengthy transmission delays, local privacy statutes, and the lack of enforcement authority.

Taking into account factors including coverage area, data integrity/completeness, record access requirements and turnaround time (less than 3 work days), A-Check America recommends the following states for those clients wishing to utilize a Statewide Criminal Records search:

  • Alabama
  • Arizona
  • Arkansas
